During a parliamentary committee meeting on Tuesday, it was revealed that the power sector in Pakistan has incurred a staggering loss of Rs470 billion due to a lack of cooperation from the provinces.
The meeting, presided over by Senator Saifullah Abro at the Parliament House, focused on discussing the generation and distribution of electricity to different provinces.
The Power Division informed the Senate Standing Committee on Power about the substantial loss incurred, emphasizing that the lack of cooperation from the provinces was the root cause. The committee, however, deferred the remaining agenda to be addressed in upcoming sessions.
The committee expressed dissatisfaction with the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) for failing to address the concerns raised by the complainant.
It was also noted that the NTDC had not adhered to instructions from the Lahore High Court.
Labeling the NTDC as “ineligible and fraudulent” with “mala fide” intentions, the committee announced that it would continue to scrutinize the NTDC’s activities, especially in relation to the 765kV double circuit transmission line project from Dasu Hydro Power Station to Islamabad.
Senator Saifullah Abro, chairing the committee, emphasized its role as the guardian of public funds, vowing to thoroughly investigate every rupee spent.
The committee had already finalized its findings regarding the Dasu Hydro Power Station to Islamabad transmission line.
The Power Division was questioned about the implementation of previous recommendations made by the committee. An official responded that they had received the approved minutes and requested time for the recommendations’ implementation.
An in-camera discussion also centered around public petitions related to the tender, design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the 765kV double circuit transmission lines Dasu-Mansehra-Islamabad (LoT-I, II, and III). Sitki Serifeken, representing SA-RA Energy, provided detailed insights into the matter. Committee members raised various queries, which were addressed during the discussion.
After comprehensive deliberations, the committee merged its findings with those of the 765kV double circuit transmission line project LoT-I.
The meeting was attended by several senators, including Fida Muhammad, Saifullah Sarwar Khan Nyazee, Prince Ahmed Umer Ahmedzai, Sana Jamali, Haji Hidayat Ullah Khan, Bahramand Khan Tangi, Hafiz Abdul Karim, and Muhammad Asad Ali Khan Junejo. Representatives from relevant departments were also present during the session.
